In 2020 I See #21

In 2020 I See... contacted Alex Paterson, Media and Public Relations officer for Greenpeace Canada to get his unique perspective as to what he thinks the world will look like in the year 2020. hjkjkljfd
jkfgkfh

What do you think the world will look like in 2020?

For me, I'm first and foremost concerned with the health of our planet. In both my job and my personal life, I try and pay close attention to what we are doing right now to ensure that we're acting for tomorrow, today. 2020 isn't far away, but scientists, environmental groups, politicians and everyday citizens all across this planet are pointing to that year as the deadline for our planet. If greenhouse gas emissions do not peak in ten years time, our fight against global warming becomes nearly impossible to fight without drastically altering our everyday living on this planet. And right now, we're not only on the road to this dangerous reality, but accelerating towards it. Our politicians aren't showing leadership on climate change, we're placing too much emphasis on profitable but unsustainable industries, and the socio-economic divide between the haves and have nots grows larger every day. What I think the world will look like in 2020 is vastly different than what I hope it will look like - a world where renewable energy is locally harvested and communally shared in the effort to reduce our impact on this earth.

If your view is negative what do you think humanity must do in order to prevent your view from becoming a reality? If your view is positive what do you think humanity must do in order to ensure your view becomes a reality?

We need to invest billions in renewable energy, vastly reduce our dependency on fossil fuels, help the developing world adapt to a warming planet, stop deforestation, plant trees and support local businesses, agriculture and community initiatives that promote active citizenship.

If you had the chance to pass along a message to whoever or whatever is on this planet in 2020 what would you say?

I hope that our leaders in the future are able to promote the delicate balance on this planet and learn from the lessons that our destructive past has to teach us. Again, 2020 is not far away, but we can take steps right now to ensure that when we arrive, we'll be proud of the hard work we've done to leave this place better than when we found it. This is a challenege and a generation that demands greatness, and for once, we should expect nothing less from our leaders.

everyone will carry their DNA sequence in a credit-card form. When we go to the doctor, we will bring our chip with us. This will enable doctors to screen our gene sequence for pre-disposition to genetic diseases (i.e. cystic fibrosis) and quickly diagnose other conditions such as cancer, or screen for birth defects in unborn children.

In an another attempt to get more responses we decided to send out another mail art. We sent this as a response to call for art work depicting a future of no violence towards women. The only requirement was that we used hearts.

In 2020 I see.. consumption, consumption, and more consumption. We live in a world where we are taught that consuming makes us a better person. What's in our future if this is where we stand now? 40 million kids made up $250 billion of the shopping market a few years ago, where is this going end?

So, here is the deal... we have received two submissions since the project started last week, but we decided to create some mail art to send to out to other calls in hopes of getting some art work for our project back. We sent them to generic mail art calls that allowed for a lot of creative freedom so we could send them ours ideas of 2020.

Here is one that we sent to a call in Texas supporting the Republican Party...

Welcome to Your Future...

Welcome All,

Thank you so much for stopping by our blog! This blog is dedicated to the displaying of all the artwork and messages we receive during our 'In 2020 I See...' Campaign.

So what is this 'In 2020 I See...' campaign, you ask?

This campaign is a chance for you to tell us what you think the world will be like in 2020!
We live in a world where the media constantly tells us what is exists, what is important and what will happen to us. Lately, it seems like the media has been suggesting nothing but negative predictions as to where our world is going, but what do you think? Is it going to be a world of peace with no such thing as cancer? Or will it be a polluted world amidst a universal war? We want to know!

It is our hope that this blog, and this artwork sparks conversation about what needs to be done to ensure that our fears for 2020 do not surface, and our hopes become realities.

Please feel free to comment or contact at us at intwentytwenty@gmail.com

Enjoy!
